Protector of Chaos - Chapter 5: A Dark Revelation

When Alter awoke the next morning, he was feeling overexcited. Today, he would finally get the answers to his inquiries. All he needed was the exact location of Doctor Eggman, but he needed Blaze's friends for that. For now, he had to burn time until Blaze arrived as she said she would. He figured a light breakfast would do the trick.

The wolf walked down to his kitchen and prepared himself some tea and blueberry mini muffins, more than what he wanted. He ate in silence, but grew bored when fifteen minutes went by and Blaze still hadn't shown up. He moved to the living room and sat on his couch. The three flatscreen televisions hovered over to him with command options on their screens. Alter decided that he would play a few games until Blaze appeared. The video game television moved closer to Alter, and the other two televisions departed.

Alter selected BioShock to play, then his game controller teleported in his hold, and the game began. Just when Alter was about to rescue a Little Sister from her guardian Big Daddy, Alter's doorbell reverberated throughout the palace. It was time. The wolf felt a smirk come to his mouth, then proceeded down his main passage and answered the door. Blaze was standing outside with a pink hedgehog wearing a red dress with a white lining, a red hairband, red boots with white stripes, and white gloves with golden bracelets on each wrist.

Next to the hedgehog was a small, young, cream-furred rabbit who's attire consisted of an orange shirt with a blue ribbon, orange and yellow shoes, and white gloves. A tiny light blue Chao with yellow markings and a red bow-tie on its chest hovered close to the rabbit. Its eyes were big and blue, and a yellow pom-pom ball levitated above its head, bouncing whenever it made a movement.

"Hi, Alter! I'm Amy Rose!!" the pink hedgehog introduced herself with a wave energetically. "And this is Cream and her Chao, Cheese."

The rabbit did a polite bow. "It's nice to meet you, Mr. Alter!" she spoke softly and gently.

"Chao, Chao!!" Cheese agreed.

"Likewise," Alter said. "Please, come in."

Alter stepped aside to allow the girls to enter. Once everyone was through, the door closed on its own. Amy and Cream made "ooohs" and "aaahs" as they proceeded through the large, fancy palace. As the group approached the living room, a rich aroma made its way to Cheese, and the Chao flew off towards the kitchen with glee.

"Cheese!! Wait up!!" the rabbit called out, running after it.

Cheese was sitting on Alter's marble table, enjoying a few muffins that Alter had left out. Alter decided to let him be and led the girls to his living room. They each took a seat on his couch while Alter sat on his armchair.

"Shall we get down to business?" the wolf spoke.

"Certainly," Blaze responded. "I told Amy and Cream everything that you relayed to me yesterday."

"We think we might know where to find Eggman," Amy continued. "If he's been making moves around here lately, then he's likely plotting another scheme somewhere nearby. We remember he has a base in Night Babylon, but we can't recall exactly where it's located..."

"I see..." the wolf said thoughtfully.

Alter closed his eyes in thought. He pictured an exact replica of Night Babylon in his mind, searching for any clues that he could use to help unclog Amy's memory. He wandered the streets every night ever since he moved to the city, so he of all people should be familiar with every corner of the city. He continued to search his mind, waiting for a light to shine on one location. And then, it hit him. His eyes shot back open. He could remember an odd building he had observed just before he became a Protector. He knew it looked familiar back then, but now it represented all he needed to know. Alter smirked with enlightenment.

"I know what the base looks like, however, I too can't seem to figure out where I had seen it."

Amy sighed dreamily at those words, or rather, the accent in which Alter spoke in. "Are you from London???" she asked suddenly, her eyes sparkling with interest.

"W-what?!?!" Alter and Blaze said together. Cream simply giggled.

"Stay on topic!" Blaze demanded. "This is important."

"Okay, okay!" Amy subdued.

"Anyways..." Alter started again. "The building looks just like the doctor: round, glowing eyes, big, pointy nose, metal teeth for doors... It even had goggles and a mustache."

"Hmm..." Amy put a finger to her lip in thought. "You know, that sounds exactly like one of his bases! That has to be the one we're looking for."

"Let's not dawdle then," Blaze said while rising from the couch. "We have to find that building before Eggman makes his next move."

With that said, everyone stood back up and headed to the main passage. Cream retrieved Cheese from the kitchen, then skipped after the others. Once everyone was outside, Alter sealed the door shut. He felt strange walking with others in his yard, but it made him feel more confident to have their support. Snow crunched and mushed as they made their way to the gigantic wall of ice that Alter had constructed to keep out intruders. He aimed his hand at it, and a doorway formed. The group stepped through the opening, and the doorway became solid once more. They were now near the central plaza of Night Babylon.

Blaze walked with perfect posture, never tripping over risen concrete or becoming unbalanced. Alter admired her calm and serious nature. In many ways, the two were just alike. They both led the way around the city, looking in every direction for Eggman's base. They came across the bar, but didn't stop to visit Phillip. Though Cream was still in a peppy mood, she was beginning to complain about how long they were walking. Amy told her to bear through, however she too was becoming exhausted.

Just when Amy was about to drop to her knees for a little break, she saw something. She stopped moving, her mouth held agape from surprise, and a finger pointing off in the distance.

"Look! There it is!!" she said excitedly.

Everyone turned their attention to what Amy was pointing at. It was a building that looked exactly as Alter had described. Eggman's base has just been spotted. Alter stared at it in disbelief, but there was no mistaking it. He quickly verified that this was indeed the building he had seen before. Both excitement and apprehension rushed through him. This was it.

"Well done, Amy," Blaze congratulated. "We'll have to be cautious. Are you ready, Alter?"

"Absolutely," Alter replied. "Today, I achieve my revelation."

"We'll be with you every step of the way!" Amy assured.

Alter nodded, and the group approached the doors of metal teeth. The top row of teeth moved upwards, and the lower row of teeth slid downwards, creating an opening. Everyone stepped inside the entry, which was a big elevating platform. It began to slowly descend to the lower, underground level. Before it could get there, the elevator stopped, and an announcement could be heard coming in. The Mobians looked around frantically, confused.

"Ho ho ho ho ho!!!" Eggman's maniacal laugh tore through the speakers. "I had a feeling that you would be paying me a visit soon, wolf boy! And I see you brought friends!!" He paused to chuckle more. "Well, don't be shy!! I've prepared a warm welcoming for you!"

Alter growled with disgust, his fists balled with anger. Eggman was waiting for him. He should have expected this. The elevator began to shake very violently, frightening Cream who was crouched down hugging a just as frightened Cheese. The elevator's flooring quickly disappeared, leaving a dark hole in its place. The Mobians fell through it immediately, completely unprepared. Alter felt his body hit a metallic structure and move forward automatically. He was on a slide of some sort that went in many directions, sometimes straight, but often curving. He could hear the girls behind him screaming, or rather, Amy and even Blaze were. Cream and Cheese were laughing and giggling from the joy of the ride.

A bright light could be seen rapidly approaching the moving Mobians. They each went through it and found themselves in a steel chamber. They landed on their feet, swirling around and wobbling back and forth from dizziness.

"Where... are we...??" Amy asked while panting heavily.

Alter looked around the small chamber. There was a passage in front and behind them. He inched forward a bit and discovered that he was standing on a barred object. An air vent. Alter sighed.

"We're in an air duct," he spoke. "This vent may be the only way out, the only way the doctor wants us to go."

"So be it," Blaze said.

Alter gazed through the tiny slits of the vent, making out the room they were standing over. He could see rows and columns of metal containers and platforms that were scorched with burns. With a powerful kick, he broke through the vent, sending it down to the metal floors with a loud clang. The Mobians jumped through the hole and landed safely. They walked around for a few seconds, but stopped when the speakers began to activate once more.

"Welcome to Metal Depot!!" Eggman said cheerfully. "Here, I allow my wonderful creations to train peacefully with one another, perfecting their many programs designed to destroy you all!! Speaking of my magnificent and invincible inventions, here comes the next wave!"

The group stood in their fighting stances just as Egg Fighters, Egg Fighter Knights, and Egg Launchers appeared in bright flashes of light. Amy withdrew her Piko Piko Hammer and swung it at the closet robot to her, smashing it like a soda can with brute force. Cream pointed a finger towards three Egg Fighters that were charging towards her. Cheese read the command and shot right through the robots with excellent speed and strength. Another robot came behind Cream, but met its end at the hands of Blaze's fireball. The cat then twirled around in a circle, becoming a fiery tornado, then rammed through as many robots as she could.

Alter dodged a few sword swings from the Knights, which were surrounding him on all sides. He quickly ducked his body and punched the ground, forcing ice shards to erupt through the floor which pierced each Knight, causing them to explode. He flew in the air with an ice platform, then accelerated forward while firing ice shards at the robots below him. Amy did a spinning motion with her hammer, summoning a pink tornado to repel the robots that were closing in on her and Cream.

The Egg Launchers had positioned themselves on top of the containers and began to lock-on to the Mobians, firing streams of missiles towards them. Amy whipped up another tornado and sent it towards the missiles. The twister caused the missiles to swerve off course and hit the Egg Fighters instead. Mortified, more Egg Fighters ran towards the hedgehog to pummel her. Cheese assisted by mimicking a move similar to Blaze's tornado, knocking the robots into the air, only to get destroyed by more fireballs from Blaze and Alter's ice shards.

"Is that all you got, Egg head!!" Amy mocked.

Eggman roared with anger. "That's it!! You asked for it!!! Prepare for your inevitable demise!!"

A large, dark portal began to form at the center of the floor. Rising from the depths of it was a big, golden-armored robot with red and green designs. It had a multicolored sphere implanted on its chest, a shield at least ten times the length of a regular sized shield in its right hand, and a long, sharp lance as its complete left arm along with spikes extending from its shoulder. Jet boosters could be seen behind it, keeping it airborne. From within the robot, both Orbot and Cubot were piloting it.

"You're going to get it now!" Orbot declared through the robot's speakers.

"Let's-a-go!!" Cubot said with an Italian accent.

"Feel the wrath of the mighty Egg Emperor!!!" Eggman yelled.

Alter shook his head. He couldn't let these two imbeciles waste his time. He looked pass them, spotting a door at the far end of the room. He had a feeling that Eggman could be on the other side. He got Blaze's attention by catching her eye. He nodded his head towards the door. She understood immediately.

"Amy, Cream," she whispered to them. "We have to distract these two so that Alter can get to the door over there. Do whatever it takes!"

"Gotcha!" they both responded.

More Egg Fighters, Launchers, and Knights appeared at the scene, this time accompanied by Aero-Cannons. The Aero-Cannons fired on sight, but the Mobians dodged the ammunitions on time by leaping out of the way. Alter made his move. He became intangible then dived underground, slowly making his way to the door. Robots fired at the ground in attempts to harm the wolf, but to no avail. The girls took their chance to attack the robots. Blaze dashed towards the Egg Emperor, then spun in a flaming tornado, taking out a few Fighters that tried to stop her. As soon as she got close to the Emperor, she jumped into its chest, causing it to rebound.

She had the Emperor's attention now. It swung its lance at her, hitting her hard into the air. She recovered with a back-flip, but was hit again by an incoming rush from its massive body, crashing her against the wall. Alter emerged in front of the door, but stopped when he saw how bad Blaze was getting beat. He made a step towards her, but Blaze smiled and shook her head. She was acting. Blaze was luring the Emperor away from the door so that Alter could get through. Alter grinned, then took in a deep breath. He opened the door and stepped through.

The wolf continued to advance down a long hallway, eventually coming to an end. He walked into another room. This room looked much more high-tech than the previous room he was in. There were tables littered with robot parts and blueprints, as well as many engines and tunnels connected to the walls. Near the far end of the room was a huge computer with a chair that had its back facing Alter. He knew Eggman must have been sitting there.

"So, you've made it here..." the doctor said lowly. "It's too bad you came all this way for nothing!"

"Unless you want an ice shard shoved through your skull, I suggest you resume the tale you were about to start on the department store's roof that night. I want to know what happened to me, and you WILL comply," the wolf threatened.

Eggman laughed, then turned his chair around to face Alter. "You are in no position to be demanding anything, you overgrown puppy!!"

Alter growled angrily, then aimed his hand at the scientist, preparing to attack him. Before he could however, he started to feel a change in the room, as if it were becoming charged with power or electricity. He then began to feel a third presence, right behind him in fact. Alter knew who it was without turning to him. The person spoke.

"I am the Transcendent Plasma. The name is Syber the Hedgehog," he spoke solemnly. "You may refer to me as Syber."

"Alter the Wolf, Chosen Protector of Amethyst," the wolf replied, still aiming his hand at the doctor.

"Why waste your time and abilities on such a miniscule threat such as our mutual enemy Dr. Robotnik? You should save your power to defend yourself against me," Syber advised. "I wish to see if you have what it takes to... entertain me."

Before Alter could respond, Syber had attacked him with a swift back-kick. Alter managed to brace himself in time, skidding across the floor from the force of the kick. Syber had his back to Alter, waiting patiently for his reaction. Alter bared his fangs, then launched himself at the hedgehog, performing rapid punches. Syber countered by performing rapid punches of his own, striking blow after blow with each of Alter's punches. Syber made a quick swerve with his right fist, striking Alter's left arm. Alter winced in pain and jumped back, panting. He held his arm while keeping his eyes on Syber. He couldn't believe how fast Syber could move, and he knew that was nowhere near his limits.

"Disappointing. Do not tell me you are tired already," Syber taunted. "Then again, you are not the wolf that I wish to engage in combat with."

"What... do you mean...??" Alter asked.

Syber didn't bother answering. In the blink of an eye, the hedgehog appeared behind Alter and made an attempt to punch him. Alter quickly moved back and watched as Syber's fist went crashing through the floor, creating a sizable crater. The hedgehog stayed in that position until the rubble fell to the floor and the sparks died out. Alter used this opportunity to prepare an offense. He raised his hands above the crater. Ice shards began to rain down inside it, but Eggman showed no concern.

Inside the crater, Syber was dashing back and forth, punching and kicking each ice shard with tremendous agility. Not a single shard was able to hit the ground or harm the hedgehog. By the time the downpour had finally ceased, he jumped back up. While still in midair, energy began to envelop his hands and he spread his fingers out, creating a similarity to large claws. He landed on the ground and raced towards Alter, jabbing him consecutively on the abdomen and the thigh. The wolf fell to his knees, groaning, pain sheering through his body. Alter had never felt anything like this before. It was pain, yes, but it wasn't a physical pain to his muscles or organs. It's as if the attacks went straight to his nerves. He glared at Syber. He had to find a way to defeat him.

Battle with the Egg Emperor

Amy and Cream teamed up to fight the robots while Blaze chose to handle the Egg Emperor on her own. A group of Fighters and Knights were making their way to Amy and Cream. The rabbit lifted Amy into the air, then swung her around for a few seconds. After Amy gained enough acceleration, Cream tossed her at the robots, successfully destroying them all. With Cream alone, the Launchers fired missiles at the rabbit. Cream wasn't worried however, as Cheese quickly appeared to her aid, forming a tornado around her that blocked the missiles. Amy returned, darting towards the Launchers with her hammer drawn. She spun herself around, then forced her way through their mechanical bodies as they combusted.

Blaze, meanwhile, was having a much harder time defeating the Emperor than she had anticipated it would be, despite the pilots of the giant mechanism. She was currently running after the Emperor as it used its jets to move backwards. With a slash from its lance, a laser appeared and curved after Blaze. She dodged it by jumping in the air and twirling her body. While still in that position, Blaze boosted the power in her twirl with fire, and struck the Emperor on its chest. The robot shook from the damage, then flew off in the distance.

It then began to fire multiple rockets after Blaze. The Aero-Cannons added ammunitions to the attack. Blaze grunted. She formed herself into a fire tornado, then accelerated behind the metal platforms. The missiles and ammunitions pursued her, but were destroyed if they made contact with any of the platforms. Amy snuck up behind the Emperor and delivered a powerful swing from her hammer, knocking it into a container just as Blaze passed by. The firings pursuing Blaze clashed against the Emperor's massive body. Orbot and Cubot fell out of the robot, exhausted. The Emperor was finished. Cream and Cheese took it to their liberty to destroy the remaining Aero-Cannons, leaving only a few Knights, Fighters, and Launchers to deal with. The girls rushed back into battle, assured that victory was on their side.

Back to Alter

Alter had enough of Syber. He would do whatever it took to get his answers from the doctor. The wolf stood back up, boiling with anger, catching Syber's attention. Alter recklessly fired ice shards at the Transcendent Plasma, who punched through the shards with his Plasma Claws. He knew Alter was coming close to his breaking point. He needed something that would unleash the wolf's wrath, which would in turn release the wolf's power.

"You expect to claim the truth you seek from the doctor, and yet you cannot even defeat me? You are not worthy of the knowledge you desire. Until you defeat me, until you surpass me, until you conquer me, until you entertain me... you will never claim that which you seek. Show me your true power."

Alter crouched back down to his knees, holding his head while screaming in agony. Syber's words were true. He didn't come all this way just to get tossed aside like a rag-doll. Something clicked in his mind, and suddenly, his anger turned to pure madness and thrill. Syber and Eggman watched as a dark aura began to stir around Alter, enveloping and snaking around him. From within the dome, Alter was embracing the one thing Phillip told him to never embrace again: the darkness. The green on his attire inverted, becoming purple, as did his eyes. A dark, venomous sensation filled the room, giving Eggman chills.

The scientist couldn't let this go on any longer. He pulled out an energy blaster and aimed it at the wolf with trembling hands. Syber noticed. He couldn't allow the doctor to interfere with his entertainment. In a split second, he dashed over to the scientist and kicked the blaster away, disarming him.

"W-what do you think you're doing?!?!" Eggman asked, his voice shaking.

"Stay out of this. Alter is mine to defeat. Allow him to finish the transformation or you will answer to me," the hedgehog said coldly, emphasizing is desire to face this form of Alter. Eggman grudgingly accepted.

The wolf rose up slowly, almost remotely, as if he was no longer in control of his body. He took a few steps, then brought a hand to his eyes, watching the inky aura sway like smoke. He grinned maliciously and laughed so eerily that Eggman began to yell words of horror and doom. Syber was impressed, but appearance alone wouldn't be enough to satisfy him. He wanted action, and plenty of it.

The hedgehog blinked, but was not surprised to see that Alter had moved directly in front of him during that scarce amount of time. Alter cocked his head to the side, staring at Syber's eyes as if trying to hypnotize him or read his thoughts. Eggman hid behind his chair, not wanting to fall under the wolf's haunting gaze. Syber remained calm, unnerved, but he was getting slightly annoyed. The hedgehog punched straight forward, but his arm went right through Alter like a phantom, not injuring him.

"Intangibility..." Syber confirmed. "You are most certainly filled with surprises, but as am I."

The hedgehog dashed into the air, then performed a short burst to give himself some distance between himself and Alter. Still in the air, Syber extended his tail and sent it after Alter like a tentacle. The dark wolf defended himself with a wall of ice, which proved futile as Syber's tail smashed right through it, striking the ground where Alter was just at a second ago. The wolf reappeared in the air and fired multiple dark shards at the hedgehog. Syber somersaulted against the spears, incapable of destroying them since they were strengthened by the darkness. Both fighters landed opposite from the other.

Play time was over. Alter aimed both of his palms at Syber, grinning malevolently. Syber felt that he was up to something. The hedgehog braced himself when he spotted a small, dark sphere manifest a few centimeters from Alter's palms. The sphere gradually began to increase in size. Eggman watched in horror as objects in his base began to orbit the sphere. Even the ceiling was torn apart and forced within the sphere. The wolf fired the sphere at Syber, who deflected it with his charged right hand, but came close to falling for Alter's trick.

The sphere was merely a diversion. A ray of pure concentrated darkness ignited from Alter's palms as he howled a ferocious victory. Syber caught the ray in his own hands, trying to keep it from pushing him back and dealing him damage. Alter grunted at Syber's stubbornness, then boosted more power into the ray, making it more larger and deadlier. Syber crouched down on one knee at the weight of the ray's power.

"It's over, it's over, it's OVER!!!!!" the wolf chanted psychotically. "Swallow up what little pride you have left and drown in despair!! Give up and DIE!!!!"

Syber lifted his gaze to align with Alter's gaze. "Giving up is not an option. It never was for me. I simply desire entertainment through conflict, and you will provide. Let us kick things up a notch."

At risk of becoming overcomed by the dark laser, Syber rested his left arm, straightening it vertically. Energy began to build on his hand and sharpened, becoming a blade. He then switched the roles of his hands; the left hand with the energy blade opposing the ray, and his right arm supporting his left arm. Using the raw energy of his Plasma Blade, he slowly crept forward through the ray, shocking Alter. The wolf became even more paranoid when Syber almost became within arms reach of him. He quickly pulsed another burst of darkness through the laser, successfully pushing Syber back some.

Using the time he bought for himself, he placed his left middle and index fingers on the glowing, violet gem on the back of his right glove. Almost immediately, a blade of his own formed over his digits. Knowing that Syber could break through the laser now since only one hand was focusing on it, Alter canceled the attack, then charged towards Syber with his Shadow Blade held securely. Syber followed suit. Their blades connected.

Both parties grunted as they tried desperately to overpower the other. Sparks began to flare and shimmer against the walls. Eggman stayed sited behind his chair, afraid to move even the slightest muscle in fear of getting caught in the showdown. Neither side was willing to back down, leaving Syber with only one tactic left to try.

"I will admit, you have impressed me, Protector of MY Emerald," Syber said smugly. "Though, if this is all the strength that you posses, then your entertainment value shall decline rapidly. It is time to put an end to this."

With his Plasma Blade still locked to Alter's Shadow Blade, Syber raised the thumb, middle, and index fingers of his right hand towards the exposed sky. A tiny orb of plasma energy began to form at the tips of his fingers. He quickly fired it into the heavens. Soon, the clouds darkened, and the sky flared with lightning. Rain fell down into the base, drenching all of Eggman's tools. The simple downpour suddenly became a vicious storm. Alter kept his blade focused on Syber's blade, still determined that he could outmatch Syber. The wolf wasn't prepared for what happened next.

Bolts of lightning crashed down into the shelter, electrifying anything that was caught within its range. Both Syber and Alter roared in pain as the lightning seized control of the battle. With a final blast, Alter was knocked against a wall, barely conscious and completely drained of power. He slowly returned to his regular state, free of the darkness' hold for now. Syber was hit hard too, but he merely dropped to one knee and stayed down, breathing steadily. Eggman managed to stay safe throughout the thunderous chaos. He sighed with relief when he noticed the battle was finally over.

Right at that moment, Blaze, Amy, Cream and Cheese bursted into the room, each calling after Alter. They ran to him and helped support him enough to stand. His whole body was numb, and his head ached. He could still feel shock waves dancing through his bones. Eggman decided to use this distraction to escape. The scientist quietly summoned his Egg Mobile and jumped inside it. With the roof blown off, he could escape in a split second without getting detected. He immediately launched the vehicle into the sky, but didn't count on an extendable tail from Syber to hold him in place. With a violent tug, Syber slammed Eggman back to the ground.

"Going somewhere, Doctor Robotnik?" the hedgehog asked rhetorically. "I do believe Alter came here for the sole purpose of obtaining the answers to his queries. It would be rude to simply depart without rewarding the Protector for providing me with the entertainment I waited so long for."

Eggman remained silent, pouting lowly very childishly. He never planned on telling Alter anything, but he began to change his mind after things started getting hot. Blaze approached the scientist angrily, flames crackling under her footsteps.

"You had better talk now, or I'll give this base such a makeover that it will be reminiscent of a volcanic explosion!!"

The doctor felt sweat beading down his forehead. He couldn't risk losing all of his most valuable data and records. Before he could start talking however, someone decided to start explaining for him.

"It's called 'Operation: Constraining Mephiles'," a female's voice said from behind the audience.

Everyone, with the exception of Syber, turned to the elevator of Gimme Shelter. Walking casually to the group was Shadow and Rouge. Alter was surprised to see them so soon, but curiosity overcame him at what they must know. The others felt the same way.

"Mephiles??" asked Amy.

"That's right, darling," Rouge spoke. "Mephiles was once the conscious mind of the eternal sun god, Solaris. Eggman planned on infusing Mephiles' power with Chaos' perfect state to swamp the entire planet and create Eggman Land. Fortunately, G.U.N. was able to find out his plans in time by hacking into his servers and planting a spyware. We pulled up all available files relating to the operation and studied them."

"We were prepared to terminate the doctor's objectives," Shadow told, "but we weren't expecting him to act as soon as he did. He managed to make it to Angel Island, deceive Knuckles from his position at the Master Emerald, and summon Chaos. Had we not arrived in time, the doctor would have been victorious. It wasn't until we witnessed Alter becoming consumed by the darkness that we discovered Eggman must have succeeded."

Eggman snickered. "Oh, please. I had no intention on giving that wolf my dark sphere."

"What do you mean?!?!" requisitioned Alter. "Are you telling me that this was an accident???"

"A very disastrous accident..." Everyone listened intently as Eggman explained. "It happened suddenly while I was still on Angel Island. I was simply flying to my destination when one of those blasted Chaos Emeralds came crashing into my vehicle! I lost hold of the vial, and... the Emerald collided with it. The dark sphere merged with the Emerald, becoming one entity. Just when I was planning on heading back to my base to extract the sphere, Tikal summoned us all to the shrine. She wasn't aware of the dark sphere's presence in the Emerald when she decided to take them with her. That Emerald... was YOUR amethyst Emerald, you foolish wolf!!"

Everyone gasped. Syber continued to listen closely, highly intrigued by this vast information.

"I guess it makes sense now..." Alter reasoned with himself, withdrawing his Emerald. "When I first made contact with it, I did feel a pinch in my mind, followed by a lust for power that quickly dropped. But... Why did it choose me? Is there a way to remove it??"

"The sphere must have admired certain qualities about you, qualities that it could relate to and strive on," the scientist hypothesized. "It is using you as a host to resurrect Mephiles the Dark. It is possible for me to remove the sphere, however... You likely won't survive the process, and the sphere would be destroyed as well due to it adapting to your conscious. There is nothing that I can do to give you an outcome in which you would survive. If you cannot find a way to remove the sphere in time, then eventually, the darkness will gradually conquer your very will, and Mephiles shall walk the earth once more."

Syber didn't buy that. He had a feeling that there was more Alter could do to save himself. He gripped Eggman's shirt and held him up against the wall with a Plasma Blade to his neck.

"What is the meaning of this?!?!?!" the doctor said while gagging for air. "Release me!!"

"You are not telling the whole truth. Speak the rest, or my cold stare will be the last thing you lay eyes on. By the time I have finished dismantling you, you will be begging for Death to come to your rescue."

"O-okay...!!" the scientist surrendered. "Listen carefully, you no good canine, because I WILL NOT be repeating myself! It MAY be possible for you to remove the sphere safely by utilizing the power of all seven Chaos Emeralds. The details, even I don't know. That is something you will have to discover on your own!"

"So it's settled then," Shadow began. "Alter, during our conference with Tikal, all seven Protectors will be present, each with their appointed Chaos Emerald. That will be your opportunity to test the doctor's theory."

"Yeah..."

Alter wasn't feeling too well. There was no way he would be able to rest knowing a demon's spirit was dormant within him, influencing his very being. He left the shelter without bidding the others farewell. He had only one hope remaining... the seven Chaos Emeralds which hopefully held the key to freeing himself from this dreadfully, horrendous curse.
Things are looking pretty dark in this chapter. Alter finally finds out why he became consumed by the darkness, and he also got to have it out with that mysterious hedgehog. Next chapter, we'll take part in Tikal's conference. Will all go well? You'll find out soon enough. =P
